Some simple tips...

We have put together some tips which will guarantee that you save yourself money motoring - most of the tips won't cost you anything, and all will save money in the long run! Here are our main tips - click the first couple of word on a line to go to the page on our site with more details...

Drive more slowly - don't exceed the speed limit!

Accelerate gently - a great deal of fuel is used to accelerate up to your cruising speed - the harder  you accelerate the more fuel you use over the same distance
Look ahead and start to slow down well in advance - Braking is throwing away energy (you're actually heating the atmosphere)! The harder and longer you break the more you throw away!
  Get windscreen cracks repaired ASAP!
Search for the best car breakdown cover deal - and make sure it's one which suits you.
Search for the best car insurance deal
Turn off you car's air conditioning when not required - read the manual if you're not sure how to use it
If your car has a computer which reads out MPG then use it!
Don't slip your clutch when stopped - use the handbrake!
Use cruise control if you have it
Get your wheel alignment checked - miss-alignment costs you money and can make the car drive and handle badly
Keep tyres inflated - check weekly and inflate if necessary.
Don't get parking tickets/fines, use mobile etc. Get a highway code book and make sure you know speed limits, understand parking restrictions ec.
Buy a car with a manual gearbox rather than an automatic, and buy a diesel rather than petrol
When driving, don't leave anything in the car your don't need- lighter cars use less fuel
  Have your car serviced regularly
Never coast - always have the car in gear when driving
Engage the highest gear you can for the conditions (without labouring the engine)
  Switch off unnecessary electrical equipment
Remove roof racks/bars when not i use - these increase drag at higher speeds.
Consider using an oil additive which can increase engine/gearbox life and help with fuel consumption - Fuel additives can help clean the system if your engine runs roughly.

And don't forget: The easiest way to save money is to drive smoothly - it saves fuel, wear and tear on you car and is much more comfortable for your passengers.

Overview
Saving money on your motoring isn't just about short term savings -it's also about longer term planning, like selecting the right insurance, preventing wear and tear on the car etc.
